Renters Insurance Do I Need It? By: je Dunn
Many people do not fully understand the concept of renters insurance but just consider how many times you actually rent equipment like a car, motor home, house or even a boat. Rental insurance covers the repair or replacement costs caused by damage or theft of an item you are renting.
One regular instance of this is where tenants to a rented property fully believe that if anything untoward happens that the landlord's insurance will cover the eventuality.
This is not the case and while he does have insurance, it is only for damage to the structure of the property.
Liability and personal belongings and any furniture or equipment is not covered so this will have to be bought out of savings or not replaced at all.
Tenants are also responsible for the condition of the property so if they cause a fire or flooding then they will have to pay this cost as well.
If that fact doesn't convince you, renters insurance does have another useful aspect to it. Lawyers fees and medical costs will be the renters responsibility if someone is injured owing to negligence so this is a good way to prevent large costs being incurred.
A worst case scenario is where the person might even take you to court so by having renters insurance, not only would medical expenses be covered but also the cost of the attorney and any other expenses claimed.
Many people are under the misapprehension that their car insurance will cover a rental vehicle but this is rarely the case so any damage will come out of the renters pocket but it is worth checking your credit card insurance conditions as they may cover this. After you have checked your car insurance plus your credit card conditions and find that they do not cover renters then taking out this type of short term insurance will not break the bank at approximately ten dollars or so per day it is far less expensive than replacing a new car.
Only two areas of renters insurance has been covered here but it can be obtained for just about anything that you rent and it doesn't matter if you are renting a motor home to a luxury yacht. This is not the type of insurance that should be dismissed without thought as it will bring a great deal of peace of mind when you collect that one hundred thousand dollar motor home you are having for a week. Obviously like any insurance policy, the amount will vary according to where you live, any extras you want to add and how much deductible you decide to arrange. Take the time to shop around a few different companies to get the best rates as these days most companies will reduce your premium considerably if you decide to pay a higher deductible.
